Description: This attractive species has toothed, narrowly lanceolate leaves from 1"–3" long, often with bright red stems. Flower stalks reach 4" tall and produce male flowers above and female flowers below. All parts exude milky sap if broken and can irritate the mouth and eyes.

Bloom Season: All year

Habitat/Range: Freshwater wetlands and wet prairies of the southeastern United States.

Comments: Stillingia honors English naturalist Benjamin Stillingfleet (1702–1771). The name aquatica means “of wetlands.” It is also called corkwood because the stems float and were used as fishing corks. The similar queen’s delight (Stillingia sylvatica) is common in dry pinelands and sandhills. The erect inflorescence has been fancifully compared to male genitalia, hence the name queen’s delight. Both species were used medicinally to treat syphilis, spasms, boils, and liver ailments.
